Drug addiction is a complex but treatable brain disease. It is characterized by compulsive drug craving, seeking, and use that persist even in the face of severe adverse consequences. For most people, addiction becomes chronic, with relapses possible even after long periods of abstinence. As a chronic, recurring illness, addiction may require continued treatments to increase the intervals between relapses and diminish their intensity. The ultimate goal of addiction treatment is to enable an individual to achieve lasting abstinence, but the immediate goals are to reduce substance abuse and improve the patient’s ability to function. Like people with diabetes or heart disease, people in treatment for addiction will have to change behavior to adopt a more healthful lifestyle.
Treatments for addiction vary widely according to the types of drugs involved, amount of drugs used, duration of the drug addiction, medical complications and the social needs of the individual. Various types of programs offer help in drug rehabilitation, including: residential treatment (in-patient), out-patient, local support groups, extended care centers, and recovery or sober houses. Besides the standard treatment such as drug detox, nowadays people are also looking into holistic drug rehab as additional treatment. Although holistic approach such as acupuncture, healthy diet changes, spiritual counseling, and meditation are excellent to refresh body, mind, and soul, and to improve quality of life, it is not enough and cannot replace the common drug treatment.
Before looking for any drug treatment, something like dual diagnosis needs to be considered. The term dual diagnosis is used to describe the comorbid condition of a person considered to be suffering from a mental illness and a substance abuse problem. It can be very difficult to find appropriate dual diagnosis treatment. Most substance-abuse centers do not accept people with serious psychiatric conditions, and many psychiatric centers do not have expertise with substance abuse. But, there are drug rehab centers that have the capacities in simultaneous and coordinated treatment of individuals with both mental illness and substance abuse issues. This will make higher success rate for treatment.
